Daniel Mato (b. 1983) is a French painter living and working in Paris. A graduate of ENSAPC (École Nationale Supérieure d'Arts de Paris-Cergy), he was awarded the Prix International de Peinture Novembre à Vitry in 2017 and has exhibited widely in solo and group shows across France. Mato’s artistic process centers on the raw cotton canvas, where he begins with a decisive gesture or color that serves as a foundation. From this starting point, he builds compositions through a dynamic interplay of subtraction, layering, and improvisation. His works are characterized by their fluidity, transparency, and the delicate balance of overlapping hues that create new forms and tones. Drawing from a vocabulary of recurring shapes and techniques, each painting evolves organically, guided by the immediacy of the moment. This intuitive approach invites discovery, yielding vibrant works that embrace spontaneity and the unexpected. Through his method, Mato seeks to create paintings that exist as autonomous entities, revealing themselves as he engages with the process.
